helping children with Cerebral Palsy

"Our daughter Erica has seen tremendous benefits from the
Euro-peds intensive therapy program at the North Oakland
Medical Center.....prior to Erica's first visit at age 4, she was
spending a lot of time in her new wheelchair at daycare instead of
on the floor. As a result she had lost her ability to roll. One of her
goals that first trip to Europeds was to roll across a mat with
minimal assist. BUT, when we got home she was strong enough
to roll ALL OVER THE HOUSE!
Erica had taken a few steps in a Pony Walker at the age of 2 but with Erica had taken a few steps in Pony Walker at around the age of
2 but with minimal success and no progress. Gait trainers were
tried, but her legs scissored and she lacked the strength to stand
in order to take those steps. Euro-peds tried her in several
different pieces of equipment and found that a Smart Walker
enabled her to take those elusive first steps.
After it arrived, the orthotist that was fitting her for it was skeptical
and warned me that "She is NOT likely to just take off in
it...she will need to get used to it." He no longer got the words out,
and across the floor she walked. He practically had tears in his
eyes and called some of his co-workers in to witness her
progress. On subsequent trips to Euro-peds Erica has continued
to gain strength, endurance, and flexibility enough to impress
her teachers back home. She rode an adapted tricycle on
each visit....visit #4 was something like "5 complete rotations of
the pedals without assistance," visit # 5 no goal was made
because the next time we went, she rode all the way down the
hall by herself. Taken from Erica's Mom Lynne Fogel
